TOTAL CORRECTIONAL EXPENDITURES
Expenditures on corrections exceeded $44 billion in 1997:
- An increase from $9 billion in 1982; and
- This amount does not include the cost of arrest and sentencing processes nor does it take into account the cost to victims and/or society.
US STATE ADULT CORRECTIONAL BUDGETS
More than $30 billion was spent by federal and state correctional agencies in FY 2002, an increase of nearly 3.5 percent from 2001.
